Angie Godwin McEwen

Partner

Angie is a partner and a member of Johnston Barton's Business & Tax Practice Group.  Her practice emphasizes various aspects of real estate acquisition, disposition and finance. She has experience counseling financial institutions in real estate, senior housing and other commercial lending transactions.  Angie advises clients with respect to the negotiation and preparation of purchase contracts and leases for commercial properties. Additionally, she serves as a member of the firm’s recruitment committee.

A significant portion of Angie's practice focuses on the representation of both borrowers and lenders in commercial secured transactions, often where the main collateral is commercial real estate.  She has also worked on transactions in which personal property, such as accounts, equipment and inventory is the primary collateral. Her representation includes working with local conservation organizations in the acquisition of property rights, both through purchase and the grant of conservation easements, in lands necessary for watershed protection and public recreation and education.  One of the projects on which Angie served as lead attorney was recognized by the Birmingham Business Journal as one of the top commercial real estate deals of the year for 2008.

Angie is a graduate of Birmingham-Southern College (B.A., magna cum laude, 1995), where she was an Honors Program Scholar and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Mortar Board. She received her law degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Law (J.D., 1999), where she served as Executive Professional Authorities Editor of the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law and was the recipient of the Grace Wilson Sims Medal in Transnational Law.

Angie is a member of the Alabama State Bar, Birmingham Bar Association and the Business and Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Sections of the American Bar Association. She previously served as the Chair of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Committee of the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association.

Angie volunteers regularly with Hands on Birmingham, a non-profit organization that provides hands-on assistance to local charitable organizations by pairing organizations in need with individuals, families and companies that can meet their needs.  Angie has served on the Board of Directors or Advisory Board of Hands on Birmingham since 2003.  In 2008, Angie was named by the Birmingham Business Journal as one of Birmingham's Top 40 Under 40.  In her spare time, she also enjoys traveling, boating and waterskiing.
